A security officer attempted suicide after he allegedly shot dead three people including his ex-girlfriend in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
“The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, September 9, 2023, at the Nhlalakahle Informal Settlement.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the provincial police spokesperson, reported that an officer from a private security company had reportedly visited his ex-girlfriend’s residence.
“An altercation reportedly ensued, during which the suspect allegedly discharged his firearm, resulting in the tragic shooting of the woman, her current boyfriend, and two children,” Netshiunda stated.
He continued, “The ex-girlfriend, aged 27, her boyfriend, and a 3-year-old child were pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Netshiunda further mentioned that the other child, aged 2, was promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
The spokesperson noted that the suspect was subsequently located on Bishopstowe Road after reportedly attempting suicide by shooting himself.
“He has been admitted to the hospital, where he is receiving medical care under police supervision. A firearm was discovered near him.”
“The police have initiated an investigation into three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
Garrith Jamieson, the spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, reported that their personnel received numerous reports regarding a shooting incident in Northdale.
Upon arrival, paramedics were confronted with a scene of profound devastation, with multiple victims having suffered gunshot wounds. The crime scene was divided into two separate incidents.
“In the first scenario, paramedics discovered a 27-year-old female and a three-year-old girl, both of whom had tragically succumbed to gunshot wounds. A two-year-old boy had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest and was promptly transported to the hospital in critical condition.”
“In the other incident, located a few kilometers away and seemingly connected to the first, a male individual was found with a gunshot wound to his head. He was urgently taken to the hospital in critical condition,” Jamieson concluded.”
