ASUU strike Catholic Bishops fault FG. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, has been engaged in prolonged industrial action since seven months ago. The Catholic Bishops of Nigeria have criticized the Federal Government’s strategy in this regard.
They urged the Federal Government and the ASUU to resolve the conflict more quickly and effectively so that public universities could reopen.
This information was provided in a statement that was released at the conclusion of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), which took place from September 8–16, 2022, at the Sacred Heart Pastoral/Retreat Centre in Orlu, Imo State.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on a lengthy strike since February 14, 2022, which is unacceptable. The culprit, according to ASUU, is the Federal Government’s failure to carry out agreements. We are aware that attempts have been made to find a solution.
“But we think that going to court might not be the best and quickest method to handle the issue. We thus reiterate our request to the Federal Government and the ASUU to find a more expeditious and effective means of addressing the issues at hand so that public universities can reopen.
The Bishops also urged governments to implement appropriate legislation and create an atmosphere that encourages employment growth since doing so will lower the country’s degree of poverty, instability, and discontent.
