Ben Bruce Criticizes NLC, Urges Against Using Power for Vengeance in Nationwide Strike

Former Bayelsa Senator Ben Murray Bruce criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for its decision to initiate a nationwide strike amid its dispute with the Imo State government.

The NLC had announced its intention to commence the industrial action from 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Speaking to journalists on November 13, President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo, emphasized that the strike would persist until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility.” Disapproving of the union’s actions, Bruce urged the Nigerian labor union to adopt a rational approach and prioritize the national interest, expressing his views in a tweet on Monday night.

He said:

“A nationwide strike now because of an isolated incident in just one state that is already being addressed is not in Nigeria’s interest. It may further a personal interest, but it will harm the national interest.

“Power must not be used to settle scores. Instead, it must be used to promote the shores of our economic and democratic progress. I call on the Nigerian Labour Congress to be rational and put the national interest and let peace reign.”
