CAN laments deadly floods in Nigeria, seeks presidential relief fund. The Federal Government has been requested by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to form a Presidential Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Committee.
The nation’s top religious group declared that those affected by the catastrophic floods across the country urgently needed financial assistance.
Archbishop Daniel Okoh, president of the CAN, released a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
The cleric bemoaned the number of displaced people as well as the destruction of homes, businesses, farms, and places of worship.
Okoh recommended that the group be made up of prominent and rich Nigerians who could enlist both governmental and private sector support.
The burden brought on by the natural tragedy would be lessened by diligent intervention by all stakeholders, he said.
The leader pleaded on the government to develop and carry out long-term remedies for the flood calamity.
He demanded an enhanced warning system, structures built to withstand flooding, and additional funding for flood defenses.
Okoh also recommended that Nigerians embrace tree planting strategically in both urban and rural locations.
“The authorities should stop at nothing to restore rivers to their natural courses and introduce water storage areas.
“Apart from clearing the drainage, the government should also embark on public enlightenment about citizens’ responsibilities.”
