Gundogan’s Decision to Join Barcelona: The Inside Story

Despite Manchester City’s considerable success, Gundogan chose not to extend his contract with the club, instead opting for a free transfer to Barcelona in the summer of 2023. The German midfielder has now provided insight into the rationale behind this significant move.

In an interview with DarioAS, Gundogan disclosed that Manchester City’s timing in offering him a new contract was a decisive factor that led him to make the switch to Barcelona, despite the English club’s dominance.

The 32-year-old midfielder explained, “City took a considerable amount of time to initiate contract negotiations. Had they acted a bit earlier, the situation might have been different.”

He added, “Nevertheless, it turned out to be a perfect conclusion, happening at just the right time. Moreover, it fulfilled a childhood dream of mine to play for Barcelona.”
