Mikel Obi Expresses Feeling Cheated in the African Player of the Year Award Decision

Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel John Obi, contends that he was unjustly denied the CAF African Player of the Year Award in 2013. On his podcast, “Obi One,” the ex-Chelsea midfielder highlighted that his accomplishments surpassed those of Toure during the reviewed year.

Mikel Obi played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s UEFA Europa League victory and was a key part of the Nigeria squad that clinched the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite these achievements, he found himself trailing Toure in the CAF Player of the Year voting. Reflecting on the situation, Mikel Obi expressed disappointment, stating, “In 2013, it was my trophy (CAF Award) to be won.” He believed he was set to win based on information from CAF.
