The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has granted approval for a new name for the Nigerian league.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially sanctioned the change of the Nigeria Professional Football League’s name to the Nigeria Premier Football League.

During its 79th general assembly in Uyo on Sunday, September 10, 2023, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) granted approval for a name change of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to the Nigeria Premier Football League.

However, ahead of the 2023-2024 season, the NPFL board initiated the name change to the Nigeria Premier Football League and unveiled a new league logo without securing prior approval from the NFF. In response, the NFF issued a statement, cautioning the board that only the football governing body had the authority to authorize such changes. Consequently, the matter had to be deliberated and resolved during the general assembly.

In a communique following the meeting, the NFF announced, “The congress approved the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League.”

The commencement of the 2023-2024 NPFL season, originally scheduled to begin with a match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan, was postponed just three days before kick-off due to sponsorship-related requirements. A new start date will be announced in due course.

Enyimba Football Club of Aba, the reigning champions, will have ample time this season to defend their title as they have been eliminated from the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League.
