Warn your priests to desist from politics – Governor Uzodinma tells Catholic Bishops
Warn your priests to desist from politics – Governor Uzodinma tells Catholic Bishops. Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo State, has urged Catholic authorities in Nigeria to warn their priests from using pulpits as campaign rallies.
The Governor advised the church leaders to take advantage of the meeting to reiterate the church’s impartial stance.
At the opening ceremony of the second session of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria in 2022, which was place in Orlu, Imo State, on Sunday, Uzodinma provided the advise.
He asserted that it was improper for some clergy members to use the pulpit as a platform to advocate for their chosen candidates or political groups.
I completely agree that priests have a responsibility to keep our leaders and governments accountable, and no one will ever stop a priest from denouncing social evils like corrupt officials and poor governance.
It’s critical that you reiterate the church’s political neutrality and then advise the priests not to get involved in partisan politics, he said.
He said that if the church got involved in party politics, it would have lost its moral standing to make pronouncements.
